House Cladding and Recladding in Auckland

House recladding in Auckland covers new cladding on a new or extended home, replacement of cladding that has reached the end of its life, and weatherboard upgrades that change how a house looks from the street. ZA Construction strips off the old exterior, deals with what is behind it and puts the new cladding on, so the whole job sits with one builder.

Cladding services

Cladding and recladding services for Auckland homes

Cladding is the outer skin of a house. It sheds the rain, and what sits behind it decides whether the frame stays dry. These are the exterior jobs we take on.

Exterior cladding installation

New cladding for a new build, an extension or an addition, either matching the existing house or setting the look for the whole exterior.

Cladding replacement

Removing cladding that has failed or reached the end of its life, checking what is behind it, and fitting new cladding in its place.

Weatherboard upgrades

Replacing tired, patched or mismatched boards with a new weatherboard exterior, one of the most common ways to refresh an older Auckland home.

Exterior home transformations

A new exterior for the whole house, often timed with a renovation or new windows so the building work and the finish happen in one programme.

When to look into it

Signs your Auckland house may need recladding

Cladding rarely fails all at once. These are the things that usually prompt a closer look.

01

Paint that keeps failing

Peeling, bubbling or cracking paint, even after repainting.

02

Damaged boards or sheets

Cracked, warped, soft or swollen cladding.

03

Staining and mould

Dark marks on the cladding or around windows and doors.

04

Failed joints and seals

Gaps, open joints or sealant that has split.

05

Signs of damp inside

Musty smells or stained, soft linings on an external wall.

Seeing any of these?

A builder looking at the house is the only way to know. Tell us what you have noticed and we will talk it through.

None of these is a diagnosis. Each can have other causes, and the only way to know is to have a builder look at the house.

What is involved

What a house recladding involves, from old cladding to finished exterior

A recladding is more than putting new boards on a wall. Most of the work that protects the house happens before the new cladding goes up.

  1. Remove old cladding

The existing boards or sheets come off, exposing the building wrap and framing behind them.

  2. Inspect framing and wrap

With the cladding off, the framing and wrap can be checked for moisture damage, which is rarely visible from outside.

  3. Repair

Damaged framing or other affected material is repaired or replaced before anything new goes on.

  4. New wrap and cavity

A new building wrap goes on and, where the chosen system calls for it, a cavity behind the cladding so water can drain and the wall can dry.

  5. Flashings and new cladding

Flashings around windows, doors and junctions go in first, then the new cladding is fixed.

  6. Finishing

Trims, joints and the paint or finish are completed, and the site is left clear.

This is a general sequence only. The exact order depends on the cladding system and on what the inspection finds once the old cladding is off.

Comparing options

Common cladding types on Auckland homes compared

General guidance only, not advice for your particular house. The right system depends on the home, how exposed it is, the look you want and the budget, and we talk it through when we scope the job. Each system has its own installation requirements.

Timber weatherboardTraditional overlapping boards with a classic profile, painted or stained. It does not rot the way timber can.Homes wanting a weatherboard look with a steadier surface, common on new builds and extensions.

Painted or stained surfaces need re-coating over time.Modern exteriors, feature walls and accent areas, alone or mixed with horizontal boards.
Sheet or plaster-finish systemsA smooth, seamless surface in a painted or textured finish, with a clean modern look.Painted surface needs maintenance, and joints, sealing and detailing around windows and junctions need attention over time.Contemporary designs. “Zaine was recommended to me as reliable, honest, helpful and professional. He lived up to all expectations. He made everything seem so easy, always keeping me informed as to what was happening, co-ordinating with other tradesmen, making it all effortless. Worth so much more than a five star review. Thank you Zaine.”

“Zaine was absolutely amazing to work with! I originally just needed help with a deck extension, and he was the absolute go-to for the project. He did a fantastic job on the deck, but then he had the great idea of adding a louvre system... Next thing I knew, he was helping me source and measure a premium system from Louvre Lounge. He installed the louvre and the deck extension perfectly, creating an incredible new outdoor living space. I am already enjoying the new setup with a couple margaritas (or two) with friends on the weekends. Zaine was incredibly easy to deal with and he did a bloody good job! Highly recommend!”

FAQ

Questions about house recladding in Auckland

Cost, consent, process and where we work. For anything else, call 027 577 5892.

How much does house recladding cost in Auckland?

It depends on the size and height of the house, the cladding system, the condition of the framing and wrap underneath, the number of windows and doors, and whether consent is needed. We do not quote a figure until we know the house. Call 027 577 5892 or use the form for a free quote.

What happens during a house recladding?

The old cladding comes off, the framing and wrap behind it are checked for moisture damage, any repairs are made, a new wrap and cavity go on where the system needs one, then flashings and the new cladding are fitted and finished. The stages are set out on this page.

Do I need building consent to reclad my house?

It depends on the work. Auckland Council decides whether a particular job needs consent, and the answer can change with the scope. When we scope your recladding we talk through whether consent is likely to be needed.

What is the difference between a weatherboard upgrade and a full recladding?

A weatherboard upgrade focuses on replacing the boards and finish when what is behind them is in good order. A full recladding takes the wall back to the framing, which is needed when there is moisture damage or the cladding system is changing. The inspection shows which one fits your house.

Can you add cladding to an extension or addition?

Yes. New cladding on an extension or addition is part of our exterior cladding installation work. We can talk through matching the existing house or choosing a different look for the new section.

Who is allowed to do the work that keeps water out?

Much of the work that keeps water out of a house is restricted building work in New Zealand, which has to be carried out or supervised by a Licensed Building Practitioner. Our credentials are shown on the homepage.

Which areas do you reclad homes in?

We work from Howick across East, Central and South Auckland. The service area section on this page lists the suburbs. Add yours to the quote form and we will let you know if we can get to you.
