What we build

Four kinds of outdoor living space we build in Auckland

Most outdoor living jobs fall into one of four types, and plenty combine two or three. Here is what each one involves.

Timber deck with glass balustrade and a sea view

Decks and deck extensions

A new deck, a rebuild of a worn one, or an extension that carries the floor further from the house. We take out the old structure, then frame and finish the new one, with steps, balustrades and built-in seating where the design needs them.

Louvre pergola over a timber deck at dusk, lit from inside the house

Pergolas and covered outdoor areas

A roof over part of the deck turns it into a room you can use when the weather turns. Covered areas run from an open timber pergola to a louvre roof, like the one over the deck in this photo.

Outdoor lounge and concrete fireplace in a courtyard beside a timber-clad home

Outdoor entertaining spaces

Courtyard lounges, fireplaces, barbecue areas and open-air dining beside the kitchen. We plan the layout so seating, walkways and the route back into the house all work together.

Timber deck with a long built-in bench and slatted screen along one side

Custom outdoor structures

Built-in benches, slat screens for privacy, steps and anything else that does not come off a shelf. If you have a sketch or a photo of what you want, we will work out how it gets built.

Planning

What decides the design of an outdoor living space in Auckland

Five things shape how an outdoor area should be built. Talking them through before the quote saves changes once the framing is up.

01

Sun and shade

Where the sun sits through the day decides where the seating goes and how much roof you want over it.

02

Wind

Exposed and coastal sections feel very different from a sheltered courtyard. Screens, louvres and the shape of the deck all change how much wind gets through.

03

Privacy

Neighbouring windows and the street show where a screen or planting is needed.

04

Levels

The floor height at the doors, the slope of the section and the drop to the ground decide the structure underneath, the steps and the balustrade.

05

Connection to the house

Doors, windows, the kitchen and the route to the lawn decide where the deck starts. Built with a renovation, these line up from the start. See home renovations and extensions in Auckland.

Decks

Deck building in Auckland, from old boards to finished surface

Decks come up in more of our client reviews than any other job, from a front deck to a beach house deck on the Coromandel. A deck build starts with the structure under the boards, because that is what decides how long the deck lasts.

New decks, extensions and rebuilds. A new deck is set out from the doors and the levels of the house, then framed, decked and finished with steps and a balustrade if the height calls for one. An extension joins new framing to the old and matches the boards. A rebuild strips the old deck back and replaces what is worn.

The slider shows an old painted deck beside the rebuilt timber deck. The decks in our photos are timber, and we go through board choice and finish with you when we quote.

Pricing

What affects the price of an outdoor living project in Auckland

We do not publish prices, because the same deck can cost very different amounts on different sites. These are the real variables, and we go through them in the free quote.

01

Size and shape

Floor area, and how many corners, steps and level changes the design has.

02

Height and ground

A deck close to flat ground needs far less structure than one raised on a slope, and access for materials and machinery affects the labour.

03

Materials

The decking boards, balustrade, screening and any roof or louvre system.

04

Roof and services

A covered area adds structure, and lighting or power adds electrical work done by a licensed electrician.

05

Consent and design

Some structures need drawings and a council application before building starts.

“Zaine was recommended to me as reliable, honest, helpful and professional. He lived up to all expectations. He made everything seem so easy, always keeping me informed as to what was happening, co-ordinating with other tradesmen, making it all effortless. Worth so much more than a five star review. Thank you Zaine.”

“Zaine was absolutely amazing to work with! I originally just needed help with a deck extension, and he was the absolute go-to for the project. He did a fantastic job on the deck, but then he had the great idea of adding a louvre system... Next thing I knew, he was helping me source and measure a premium system from Louvre Lounge. He installed the louvre and the deck extension perfectly, creating an incredible new outdoor living space. I am already enjoying the new setup with a couple margaritas (or two) with friends on the weekends. Zaine was incredibly easy to deal with and he did a bloody good job! Highly recommend!”

“If you are looking to upgrade your outdoor living space in Auckland, I highly recommend ZA Construction. We engaged them for a full outdoor package, including custom timber decking, retaining walls, and a covered entertainment area. Their team brings a perfect blend of thoughtful design and solid craftsmanship. Every stage of the project was handled with professional oversight, and they stayed flexible whenever we wanted to adjust the scope. What impressed us most was their attention to moisture control and structural integrity - you can tell they build for the long-term, Kiwi climate. A clean, modern, and beautiful result.”

FAQ

Outdoor living questions answered for Auckland homeowners

Cost, consent, roofs, other trades and where we work. For anything else, call 027 577 5892.

How much does an outdoor living project cost in Auckland?

It depends on size, height off the ground, materials, whether there is a roof and how easy the site is to work on. We do not quote without understanding the job, so ask for a free quote and we will explain what is driving the number.

Does a deck or pergola need building consent?

Sometimes. It depends on how high the structure is off the ground, how large it is, whether it has a roof and where it sits on the section. Auckland Council makes that call, and we talk it through when we scope the job.

Can you add a roof or louvre system to an existing deck?

Often yes, but the deck framing has to carry the new structure, so we check what is there before we quote. One of our clients started with a deck extension and added a louvre system once the work was under way.

What happens after I ask for an outdoor living quote?

We call to talk through the space and what you want, then price the job. Once you go ahead we order materials, sort consent if it is needed and book the build.

Can you organise the electrician or landscaper for my outdoor area?

Yes. Lighting and power points must be done by a licensed electrician, and we line them up around the build. We also work alongside a landscape designer when a project needs one.

Which areas do you build outdoor living spaces in?

Mostly East, Central and South Auckland, plus the Coromandel. Put your suburb in the quote form and we will confirm we cover it.
