Retaining walls
How a retaining wall is built in Auckland, layer by layer
Water is what a retaining wall has to deal with most, so we deal with the ground, the footing and the drainage before the wall itself. Here is the order this kind of work follows, from bare ground to finished garden.
- Set the levels: cut where the ground needs to come down, filled where it needs to come up.
- Footing: on firm ground at the base, because the wall is only as stable as what it sits on.
- The wall: built up from the footing to its finished height.
- Drainage behind the wall: free-draining material and a drain, so water has somewhere to go other than against it.
- Backfill: placed and compacted in stages rather than tipped in.
- Finished ground: topsoil, plants, turf, paths or steps, to your designer's plan.
This is the general order for this kind of work. Every site differs, and the detail depends on the site, the height and what the council or an engineer requires.

How much does landscaping or earthworks cost in Auckland?
It depends on the site, so we quote each job after talking it through with you. The main things that move the price are the size and height of any wall, how much soil is cut, filled or carted away, whether a machine can reach the area, the ground itself, drainage, and any consent or engineering the council asks for. The quote is free.
Does a retaining wall need building consent?
Sometimes. Height, distance from boundaries and buildings, what the wall carries and the area the site sits in all count. Auckland Council makes that call, and we talk through whether your job is likely to need approval while we scope it.
Do you work with a landscape designer?
We work alongside a landscape designer, and we build to a plan from your own designer as well. If you do not have a plan yet, tell us what you want and we can talk through the options.
Can a mini excavator get onto my section?
Often, yes. Mini excavators fit through many side yards and gates, which is why we use them for small earthworks. Measure the narrowest gap, note any steps, power lines or low branches, and mention them in your quote request. Where a machine cannot reach, the digging is done by hand and the quote reflects that.
